One such alternative is clean diesels which achieve 30% better fuel economy than gasoline-powered similar cars. What keeps diesel from totally replacing gasoline is the level of emissions. It is very expensive to remove the pollutants in diesel due to expensive technology involved in the whole process. The required fuel-injection systems add to the disadvantages diesel cars still have when compared with direct-injection gasoline engines. In addition, diesel costs approximately as much as gas, being taxed at a higher rate.

Making diesel from petroleum will not be the alternative that could mean freedom from imports for US. So an alternative to making diesel from oil should be sought. Transforming animal fat or vegetable oil through a trans-esterification process would yield biodiesel. Thus the fuel obtained would be free of sulfur and could be used in pure form. Biodiesel has a higher cetane rating and promotes combustion in a more efficient way, having also better lubrication properties.

A new approach of obtaining biodiesel from algae is being explored, but it will probably take decades for such a process to become available for mass production. Until then the restricted availability of biodiesel and the higher production cost doesn't make biodiesel an efficient alternative.

Synthetic diesel can be obtained through chemical conversions of natural gas, methanol or coal into diesel. The fuel resulting from these processes is also sulfur free and has a higher energy content if compared to petroleum diesel. Exhaust emission are also cleaner and the transportation for such a fuel is more efficient as it requires no refrigeration or compression.

However, the conversion of coal to diesel creates carbon-dioxide emissions, and the same is true with any synthetic fuel process.

E85 mixes corn based ethanol with gasoline but it is highly priced and has limited availability. Brazil has managed to become energy independent by relying on home-grown ethanol made from sugar. Sugar-based ethanol in US is challenging though as sugar production cannot be as efficient on American land.

Compressed natural gas is another alternative, natural gas being cheap and plentiful in US. Natural gas contains less carbon than gasoline. However, because the pollutants associated with CNG car manufacturers are reluctant to switch to such an alternative.

Hydrogen could be the most efficient alternative fuel, having water as primary byproduct. The resulting water can be used to produce more hydrogen. Nevertheless, this alternative is not as efficient as it sounds. Hydrogen produced today strips carbon atoms from natural gas, which is a fossil fuel. The carbon atoms bind to oxygen and release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In addition, hydrogen is not easily stored or transported. Solar, hydroelectric and wind power can be pollution free alternatives, however they are costly. Until we find a method of producing hydrogen from water, widespread use of it as a fuel is not likely.
